Four bridges in the Twin Counties — including the ragged North First Street overpass of U.S. 64 just north to northeast of Nashville — are scheduled to undergo permanent repairs at a total cost of $4.4 million to extend their service life.

State Transportation Department spokesman Andrew Barksdale said in a news release that in addition to the North First Street overpass, the Bethlehem Road bridge over the Tar River, the Atlantic Avenue bridge over the Tar River and the Daniel Street bridge over the Tar River just northeast of Tarboro are on the list for repairs.

American Contracting & Services Inc., of Jeffersonville, Ind., received the contract to do the work, Barksdale said. Jeffersonville is on the Indiana side of the Ohio River opposite Louisville, Ky.

American Contracting & Services can begin work in September and will have two years to complete the project, Barksdale said.

Three of the four structures are quite old, with the Bethlehem Road bridge having been built in 1959, the North First Street overpass having been built in 1960 and the Atlantic Avenue bridge having been built in 1964.

The work on those bridges will include repairing chips and potholes and replacing a thin layer of the concrete on the deck, as well as repairing or replacing expansion joints, painting the steel girders and repairing any components below the deck that are beginning to deteriorate.

Barksdale said in follow-up email correspondence with the Telegram the Daniel Street bridge is only 11 years old and will not be undergoing extensive repairs.

Barksdale said the plan for the Daniel Street bridge is to engage in using a high-pressure system to remove grime and other impurities from the surface of the concrete deck. Once that is done, crews will engage in a sealing process.

Barksdale said such maintenance as scheduled for the Daniel Street bridge is normal after 10-12 years and is another way to preserve the deck and keep the deck and surrounding components from rusting over time as the transportation department applies brine in advance of winter storms.

Barksdale said in the news release most of the work will require closures of lanes, meaning drivers should expect delays.

Barksdale also said some of the work will require detours lasting up to four weeks because there is not enough room to make repairs and safely maintain the flow of traffic at the same time.

He said motorists can check for notices of detours by going online to https://drivenc.gov/.
